Frome’s newest allotment site has rolled into action very quickly. The town’s allotment association only took over the management of the site in December, but significant progress has already been made.

“On the day we took over the site, we were marking out plots,” said Chair, Neil Cameron. “The Grounds & Properties Team at Frome Town Council, led by Simon Woollen has put up fencing and added new gates in record time. Because of this we were able to allocate plots in January and new plot holders have already been digging them over.”

Frome Allotment Association expects to allocate forty plots by the end of February. The remainder of the 100 new plots should be allocated by April. “We have a waiting list of 150,” said Neil. “In the first instance Alistair Wood will be contacting those at the top of the list to arrange a visit to the site. We have made the plots smaller to accommodate as many people as possible on the list. Some people have waited five years for an allotment.”

New plot holders have already volunteered to restore the old barn at the site, which can be used as a base for Frome Community Education courses. “ There’s a real team spirit about the place,” said Neil. “Everyone is pulling together to make this site a success.

Frome Allotment Association will have a stand at Frome’s Potato and Seed Day at the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 10th February.
